Royal Basilica of
Saint Ferdinand the Great

Neoclassical church from the second half of the 18th century, architecturally completed by Sabatini and sumptuously decorated. Filled with frescoes, gold, and marble statues, as well as including works by some of the great Spanish painters of the 18th and 19th centuries such as Zurbarán, Goya, and Alonso Cano, it is one of the most spectacular churches in the city. Originally, where the basilica now stands, there was a Franciscan monastery that, according to legend, was founded by Francis of Assisi in 1217.
